Totally understand the conflicted feeling -- there's a lot to think about and mull over for each of us when it comes to how AI impacts our careers, but where I live here in San Francisco it's been cool to see how valued writers actually are, even in a place where lots of AI tools are used.
Quick fun fact for a talk I'm preparing for -- unemployment rates for philosophers are actually much lower than software engineers lately, and tech-forward companies are hiring storytellers to better navigate what it means to think creatively.
Anyways just some recent thoughts -- these tools are becoming ubiquitous, but that's making creative thought more valuable.
Yes I agree with that! And, to be clear, I’m not anti-AI in all cases. I’m just still figuring out where I feel comfortable drawing the line…Probably like all of us are! Thanks for the thoughtful commentary!
I read Didion’s magical thinking a few years back after my grandmother died, and felt less alone in my grief.
I agree with you about Tom Lake - everyone was in love with that book and so I bought it without reading the jacket and didn’t really like it 😬 which make me wonder what I was missing 🤷♀️
She describes things with so much truth and clarity. What a gift that she's able to make people feel less alone. I'm sorry to hear about your grandmother's passing.

I love your voice and snaphots of all the books. Particularly resonated with Tom Lake. Everyone in the world loved The Bear episode with Jamie Lee Curtis as the mom. I was so distracted…I didn’t buy it. I can relate. Thanks for being real.

I agree with you about Strangers, and I had similar thoughts about Write For Money and Power - I remember the AI reveal as coming close to the end, and thought that on the one hand, it's great that Amy was open about it, but on the other hand I find the whole thing deeply troubling. Yesteryear is high on my list of books to read in the near future.
